Samuel G McCarty

April 11, 1928 - September 27, 2020

Samuel G. McCarty, 92, of Sandusky, Ohio peacefully transitioned from this life on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at home under the care of Stein Hospice.

He was born April 11,1928 in Waynesboro, Miss. to the late Isaac and Nettie McCarty. Samuel left Waynesboro at an early age. He moved to live with his older brothers in Sandusky where in 1951 he met the love of his life, Classie Mae Jones. They returned to Waynesboro, Miss. and married on November 22, 1952. Shortly after the marriage he was drafted into the Army serving in the Korean War. After being discharged he returned to his wife in Chicago, Ill. and lived there for a short period of time before returning to Sandusky, Ohio. This union was blessed with six children.

He was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Sandusky, where he sang in the choir. While serving as President of the choir they made their first recording. He also sand in the male chorus, was President of the Usher Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, was a bus driver for the church, and was a faithful member of Bible study and Sunday School. On June 17, 2012 he was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for Trustee Emeritus. He was also a member of St. Luke 26 Int’l Masons of Sandusky.

Samuel was employed at Armor Fertilizer after returning to Sandusky. He also picked apples to make ends meet. He was hired at Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain, Ohio and continued to work both at Armor and Ford until it became too much. He left Armor and worked at Ford until he retired after 30 plus years.

Samuel enjoyed watching Westerns, cowboy movies, baseball and wrestling. He loved cars, spending time with his family, and visiting the sick and shut-in. He was always busy doing something. He was a jack-of-all-trades and a master of all.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Pastor Diana (Jimmy) Bruno, Cynthia (Pastor Edward) Spiller, Glenda (Michael) Johnson, Samuel E. (Sonia) McCarty, Annjeanette McCarty, and Kenneth (Mary) McCarty; siblings Nettie Lee Mercier and Margerie Worsham; 19 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of loving relatives and friends, goddaughters Cora Wiggins, Vernitha Brantley-Fearson, and godson Jeffery Murphy.

Samuel was preceded in death by his loving wife Classie Mae McCarty, parents Isaac and Nettie McCarty, great granddaughter Hanna Tye, great grandson Jaxon McCarty, great great grandson Julian Montanez; sisters, Hazel Sumlin, Lucille Matthews, Penni Mae McCarty, Emma Tedder, Pinkie McGrew, Erlene Morgan, Albenie Richey and Ozella Grant; brothers, David McCarty, Isaac McCarty Jr., Willie B McCarty and Wiley McCarty.

A walk-through viewing will be Sunday, October 4, from 6-8 p.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Shelby St (Eddy Henry Way) in Sandusky OH, where a private family service will be held Monday, October 5, at 11 a.m. Pastor Curtis L. Johnson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron, Ohio. Social Distances and COVID-19 safe practices required; must wear a mask.
