Loretta "Sweetpea" Akins

March 22, 1936 - April 19, 2020

On April 19, 2020, Loretta went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness, surrounded by family, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Loretta was born on March 22, 1936 to the late John and Mazirena Williams in Pittsburgh, PA. She grew up and attended high school in Uniontown, PA. Loretta later met and married the late John Akins and from this union was born one son, the late Richard “Ricky” Kenneth Akins.

John, Loretta and Ricky moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1956. Loretta was employed at Lorain Products and retired after 34 years of service. She was a Mother of Point of Grace Ministries under the leadership of Pastors Vanessa and Darrell Young. She also was a member of Grandmother L.O.I.S. under the leadership of Elder Betty, where she served until she moved to Pittsburgh with her sister Harriet and family.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, John Akins; her son, Ricky Akins; her parents, John and Mazirena Williams; and siblings, Mayme Penn, Emma Denson, Leona Williams, Gertrude Morgan, Pat Griffin, Gwen Davis, John Jr., and Donald Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings Jerome Williams, Harrison Williams, Harriet Wilson, Darlene Williams, Alice McClendon, all of Pittsburgh PA, Mary Jackson of Louisville KY; 5 granddaughters, Erica Brown, Deziarae Brown and April Blanton, all of Lorain, Terri (Arlington Jr.) McClinton of Elyria, Rocheal Gibson of Indianapolis IN; 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of family, nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, and faithful neighbors and friends.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions on public gatherings, private family services will be held. Burial will be Elmwood Cemetery.
