Ruth Rachel Coleman


Ruth Rachel Coleman was born the second of six children to Tommy & Odessa McIntyre in Panama City, Florida. After the death of her parents, she was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle the late Lula & Lois Hill. In 1942 she married Howard Coleman, they had one child the late Bettye Jean DeRamus. She expressed an interest in the arts early in life and was encouraged to follow her passions by her family. She moved to Elyria, Ohio in the late 1940s to be with her family. In 1950, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she would reside for over sixty years. She became a cosmetologist and cosmetology instructor opening her own business. She was a lifelong learner who enjoyed studying many topics, and excelled with sculpture and design. She graduated from California State University with a Bachelor of Arts with a Special Major in Theatrical Make-Up Design. Upon graduating she enjoyed working in the theatre in support of local productions including the production of the play Lincoln. She was a member of Hamilton United Methodist Church, Los Angeles, California. She cherished her family and her role as the matriarch and encouraged her family to pursue their passions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Coleman, daughter, Bettye Jean DeRamus, siblings Edward Reid, Lucy Lee Stacey, Henry McIntyre, Gladys Hill-Nixon, and Tommy Reid. She leaves to cherish her memory two granddaughters Shawnda DeRamus of Mason, Ohio and Davida DeRamus of Las Vegas, Nevada; two great granddaughters Naomi & Mykal DeRamus, a host of nieces and nephews, godson Steven Ross and dear friends.

A private service held by the family, May 25, 2019, with burial in Brookdale Cemetery.
