John J Spraggins

John J. Spraggins, 77, of Lorain, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

He was born May 31, 1941 in Huntsville, Alabama and moved with his family to Lorain, Ohio in 1946. He was a 1961 graduate of Clearview High School where he played on the school’s football team. After thirty-five years of service he retired as a pressman from the Lorain Journal newspaper, now The Morning Journal.

He was a longtime and faithful member of New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church where he formerly served as a church trustee. He and his wife were well-known for their ministry in visiting and assisting the sick and shut-in.

"Johnnie" loved to tell jokes and tease his family and friends, and his favorite pastime was watching western movies. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved all the Cleveland teams.

John is survived by his beloved and faithful wife of 54 years, Betty J. Spraggins (nee Hardnett), and daughter, Benita Joyce Spraggins of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Katherine “Nottie” Walden of Lorain and Margaret Ann Adams (Min. Donald Adams) of Cleveland; a brother, Deacon Sam Spraggins ((Emma Spraggins) of Lorain; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his father and mother, Rev. Cornelius Spraggins and Lucy Spraggins (nee Mastin); two sisters, Rosie Holley and Ella Mae “Peggy” Morgan; and a brother, Darnell “Bingo” Spraggins Sr.

Viewing will be Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, 3880 Dayton Ave, Lorain, where funeral services will be Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Noon; Rev. Tyrone Holley, eulogist. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
