George W Dowell Sr

February 22, 1940 - July 22, 2018

George W. Dowell Sr., “Uncle Buck”, 78, passed away on July 22, 2018 at New Life Hospice. He was born February 22, 1940 in Covington, Tennessee and moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1956. He worked as an assembler for Ford Motor Company and retired from their Avon Lake plant after 32 years of service. He also retired from Lorain City Schools as a custodian and was currently working as a school crossing guard. He was a former member of New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church and a former bass guitar player for the Seven Travelers. George was a “jack-of-all-trades” including television and computer repair, and fixing and building bikes. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, and loved hunting.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Dowell; daughters, Darlene and Dyan Dowell, and son, George W. Dowell Jr. (Tangela), all of Lorain; a sister, Grace M. Lovett of Lorain; 3 grandchildren, Courtney Smith (Andrea), Derek Dowell (Amanda), and Terrell Jeter; 3 great grandchildren, Keira Smith, Derek Dowell Jr., and Lilliana Cruz-Jeter; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Dowell; his parents, Ermin and Rena Dowell; brothers, William Dowell and Nick Williams; sisters, Margaret Dowell-Berger and Erma Grant; and granddaughter, Rena Marie Dowell.

Visiting hour will be Friday, July 27, 2018 from 11:00 AM until time of service at 12:00 PM at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 3900 Clifton Ave., Lorain; Overseer Rodney L. Thomas of Body of Christ is officiating, with Elder Courtney Smith as eulogist. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
